In my use cases, I want this information to be sent to a more general error handling layer.  As such I don’t want it streaming to output but want a collection of variables that can be passed as arguments to other procedures.

23-193r1 proposes intrinsic procedures to retrieve the source file name and line number.

A loosely-related proposal in 06-110 was for a "walkback" facility that programs could invoke.

"Write the line number, program unit name if any, and other information that specifies the location of this procedure’s invocation (first form) or a specified statement (second form) on the specified unit, as if by execution of a formatted WRITE statement\..."
