In addition to Steven's points, it might be hard to understand for 
employees of companies producing compilers-for-money the attraction of 
"free" compilers (in the sense of freedom, but also without any direct 
costs) on retired people who worked on Fortran codes during their 
student time.

I have lost track of the number of messages we got since the release of 
the first version of g77 on the 17th of February 1995 that started with 
a variant of

"In 196X, when I did my graduate research in <fill in any science> I 
wrote some Fortran code. Now that I am retired, I installed <your 
compiler> on this <Windows/Apple> system but it fails to compile my 
code, giving <this error message>."

Sometimes these questions were reasonable requests to add <very popular 
extension> to g77/gfortran.

So occasionally we caved, and added it.
