WG5,

It is very sad to hear that Reinhold has died. I knew he was unwell
because of receiving "out of office" messages since late last year, but
he responded (not as quickly as usual) and we worked together on interps
and reader comments on our book. Note that he has two papers on the
table for the next J3 meeting. I had no idea that his illness was life
threatening.

Reinhold was very supportive of WG5. It is hard to remember when I first
met him, but the minutes record that he was at the meeting in 2009 so I
have know him for at least 15 years. I came to think of him as a friend.
He contributed a lot towards the standard, particularly in connection
with coarrays. He was good at finding places where the text of
insufficiently precise or erroneous and he was good at fixing it. He was
always willing to say "yes" when asked to do something.

Reinhold joined Mike Metcalf, Malcolm Cohen, and me as an author of
Modern Fortran Explained. I doubt if we would have met our target of
publication in 2023 without his help.

Reinhold hosted meetings in Garching in 2011 and 2017. It was the second
of these that Gary recalled.  This was my last meeting as convener. The
dinner was special to me too because Reinhold had some nice words for me
and presented me with a card signed by everyone there. I still have that
card.

We will miss him.

John.
