I was going to let this go, but NAG Fortran has been available on multiple platforms, e.g. VAX/VMS, OS/390, Apollo Domain,  to name three very different ones, so is not only potentially hardware-independent, but has been ported to many platforms over the years.

There has, of course, been massive consolidation in the hardware space. Some of that consolidation has been good.
