That wasn’t my phrasing (it came from Bill Long) but yes, I did say that oneAPI and nvhpc are free, and actually neither of those supports MacOS. Nvhpc doesn’t even support Windows anymore, though I guess it is supposed to do that again real soon now (apparently they’ve had trouble filling a position). A lot of the usage of Fortran is, of course, still in the high-performance environments that remain dominated by Linux. Apple provides clang, of course, in its development environment, so flang would be the natural compiler for that platform although gfortran works perfectly well (I installed it through homebrew on my M1, which is all I have now).

Intel has abandoned MacOS, and especially Mac ARM processors. Therre will be no new versions of ifort for MacOS with Intel chips, and no ifx versions at all.
