Just FYI (putting on my ORNL hat), ORNL is still invested in gfortran, 
funding some of its development and bug fixes, since it is one of the 
most widely used compiler. The argument that it's a compiler that is 
readily available on individual laptop / workstation applies, though as 
mentioned one can also get other compilers nowadays (which is all good 
thing).

I think it's way to early to declare gfortran EOL.
