We lost a towering giant on New Year's Day.

Niklaus Wirth passed away, six weeks short of his 90th birthday.

I only met him twice, once at ETH Zürich and once in California. I
enjoyed his company. Completely unpretentious. When I asked him about
submodules in Fortran, and separating interface from implementation as
in Modula-2, he at first said he preferred the Oberon approach, and
then agreed that it is valuable for large projects and for reusable
software.
