As a bit of clarification to the “young ones”.    If I understand correctly, the semi-colon was not introduced until F90, and thus rarely seen in fixed-form source.  It is understandably easy to make the false inference.  (As indeed, I might have, had I thought about it before reading Malcolm’s message.)

No. Semi-colon is accepted in any source form. See 6.3.3.4 Fixed form statement termination
which states A statement may alternatively be terminated by a “;” character…
