There are many words in the standard that the standard doesn't define
separately. In such cases, one should refer to an English language
dictionary. When I do that, I see as the primary definition, "something
that has a real existence; thing:". In Fortran terms, this would be
something that potentially is manifested in memory or a register; for
example, variable, constant or procedure, but not a type.
I agree, however, that this term is used so often in the standard that
it should have an entry in clause 3.
