Technically, I think it just means that your name is not on the list that INCITS sends to WG5. The chance that Steve would make you go in the hall instead of watching WG5 proceedings seems quite remote. Like with J3, you would not be able to participate in WG5 votes. Seems minor.
Besides, what are the options?. You, like most of us, do not have a personal membership. Caltech is the member. When you retire, you would no longer be their representative. So, extending Caltech’s membership into 2021 would not seem to benefit you directly. I see three options (and being not that far from retirement age myself, I have thought about this):
1) Cut all ties to the committee and actually “retire”. Your family might prefer this option. But you might find it frustrating. But it is the cheapest, and offers the most freedom.
2) Apply for emeritus membership (no membership cost), continue to attend meetings when you want to on your own dime for the travel costs, and, hopefully, continue to read papers and drafts, since you are an excellent proofreader.
3) Buy, out of your own pocket, an individual membership (I think Steve does this). This definitely costs money, but avoids any of the voting issues and you stay on the ISO list. In the context of the amount it would cost to attend the meetings (once we are back to face-to-face mode), which would also be out of your pocket, the membership dues might not seem that bad.
Cheers,
Bill
