Dear all,

I said a few words to a few people when I first heard the sad news. I 
should say some to everyone.

You can see his name listed at the front of the Fortran 77 standard. I 
believe he was responsible for the inclusion of the IF construct in 
Fortran 77.

He was very active when I first joined the committee (1983). At the 
Jackson meeting in 1988 when the committee was seriously divided, he led 
the group that aimed for a significant modernization of the language and 
his ideas were largely accepted at the subsequent WG5 meeting in Paris. 
He did all the typesetting for Fortran 90.

It was a  pleasure to meet him again at the Boulder meeting in 2016, 
when he was in good shape. I will miss him.
