This is one of several problems that GitHub and similar sites addresses.
Discussion threads on
a particular issue stay together. Links between issues can be created and
followed. But anyone
who prefers email can choose to have GitHub (or a similar tool) forward all
communications by
email and can even reply by email and such replies will become part of the
thread that those
who prefer to view the discussion on the GitHub site will see. Very little
is lost in the transition
from email to GitHub (or a similar tool). A lot is gained.
One thing gained is that the other platforms invite wider participation if
the repository is public.
GitHub has become such an important, central gathering place that it's
somewhat akin to a
social medium. People often notice an open GitHub project and contribute
to it who might not
otherwise have noticed or contributed. The network effect is significant.
