We ask for a %50.00 "meeting fee," but don't usually ask first-time
visitors to pay.

We don't call it a "conference fee" or a "registration fee" because some
organizations use those terms to assume our meetings are "conferences."
At JPL at least, and maybe at other government labs and federally-funded
research and development centers, "conference" has become synonymous
with "junket" or "boondoggle," (i.e. "waste of taxpayers' money"),
resulting in a far-larger and far-longer approval process. This is
especially true for mathematicians and software engineers who work in
support of organizations that have different titles and different
charters. As one of my colleagues told me, "You'll never be an Admiral
if you're a civilian in the Navy." Mathematicians and software
engineers are almost always "civilians in the Navy."
