[J3] C836

Hi Van,

I think you mean C837. Or you are referring to a document other than the FDIS.

I agree that on the face of it C837 looks problematic. However it is not fixable before publication: “further editorial or technical amendments are not acceptable at this stage” (ISO directives Part 1, 2.7.4). That is, you would need to vote the FDIS down, and go through another round of changes and balloting. If the ballot passes with a 2/3rds majority (as it probably would even if the UK and US both voted NO!), it would go straight to publication without amendment.

Given that we all know what it means (p1 is clear), this clearly does not warrant derailing the whole process. (We would never finish otherwise, since a document of this size and complexity is always going to have mistakes.)

But it looks like a good candidate for an interp request once we have a base document. Please don’t submit interps until after that. Since the FDIS ballot has not yet started (I think), we’re not going to have a base document before the October meeting. But we should have one this year (though it will be named 19-007). That is assuming all goes well with the process.

Cheers,

8.5.8.7p1 says "An assumed-rank entity is a dummy data object whose rank
is assumed from its effective argument, or the associate name of a RANK
DEFAULT block in a SELECT RANK construct."

C836 says "An assumed-rank entity shall be a dummy data object..." with
no remark about the associate name.

Does this hang together, or does C836 need some work?
