Hello all -

Two months to go !! This is the April 2018 update for the June 9-10, 2018, Fortran geezer reunion in Berkeley, CA.

Arrangements are shaping up nicely. Since my last update a month ago we’ve:
    - arranged the meeting room in the hotel (the La Jolla room)
    - arranged a van for transportation to/from the Computer History Museum
    - arranged to have Sunday lunch at the museum Cloud Bistro restaurant
    - arranged for a group dinner on Sunday evening (Skates on the Bay)

As many of us are retirees, I’ve tried to keep costs as low as possible. The van between the hotel and the museum comes to about $20/head, round trip. The hotel won’t comp the meeting room, so we’re on the hook for that at about $15/head. Meals, are the only other non-accommodation costs of the reunion; I’ve arranged for everyone to be able to order what they want off the regular menu, and pay accordingly.

For dinner Saturday night I haven’t arranged anything in particular. Many will have been traveling that day, and I thought we could go out in small groups - the old J3 style (we all know how that goes). The hotel has a restaurant, and I’ll have a list of about five close-by restaurants ranging from very simple to more elaborate.

For lunch Sunday we’ll be at the Cloud Bistro in the museum. I understand that is very nice - pleasant space, simple menu. Here’s their menu: http://www.computerhistory.org/facilities/_media/docs/chm-cloud-cafe-fall-menu.pdf <http://www.computerhistory.org/facilities/_media/docs/chm-cloud-cafe-fall-menu.pdf>. I had thought we’d have sandwiches in the meeting room, but the hotel won’t allow that unless we buy from them at a minimum of $50/person. So we’ll leave the hotel a bit earlier than originally planned in order to get to the Cloud Bistro for lunch before our 2:30 tour. It may be we’ll have an extra treat on the museum tour - a geezer is trying to arrange a demo run for us of a Fortran II program on the museum’s 1401 (problematic since it’s Sunday, but …).

For dinner Sunday evening we will be at Skates on the Bay. That’s 0.7 miles from the hotel (Google says a 14-minute walk for those that want to do that); we’re in the main dining room that looks out over the bay. For those not walking we’ll arrange hotel shuttle service, or cars for backup. Here’s the Skates menu: https://skatesonthebay.com/menu.php?id=Dinner <https://skatesonthebay.com/menu.php?id=Dinner>. They’ll want to bill per table, but we old geezers know how to deal with that.

The Sunday morning meeting agenda is pretty much what I sent in last month’s update - somewhat shortened because of leaving the hotel a bit earlier for lunch at the museum. The slightly-revised agenda is attached below.

If you haven’t registered yet at the hotel, you can do so (until May 18) at
http://doubletree.hilton.com/en/dt/groups/personalized/J/JBKCADT-GEE-20180608/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG <http://doubletree.hilton.com/en/dt/groups/personalized/J/JBKCADT-GEE-20180608/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG>.
The reunion hotel is the Marina Doubletree in Berkeley, at 200 Marina Blvd.; the room rate is $214 (one person) or $229 (two people) per night (plus taxes of about 13%), with breakfast included. The hotel has a restaurant and a bar. It’s main website: http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/california/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-berkeley-marina-JBKCADT/index.html <http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/california/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-berkeley-marina-JBKCADT/index.html>.

Unfortunately the hotel does not have a shuttle service serving either the Oakland International Airport or the San Francisco International Airport, but the hotel website lists prices for taxi or super shuttle service from each; also, both lyft and uber operate in the area. Van Snyder sent the note included below about using BART. Attached is a BART chart and, for those adventurous souls who want to save a few bucks, BART can get you from either OAK or SFO to the North Berkeley BART station, within a couple of miles of the hotel, with just one train change. The hotel has a shuttle for registered guests that can be used within three miles of the hotel (1-510-548-7920).

In planning so far I have assumed 20 people for the computer history museum tour and dinner Sunday evening, and a similar number for the meeting room. At this point there are 11 geezers registered at the hotel, four with guests; in addition I know of at least five staying elsewhere that will participate in some or all of these events - so we’re in the neighborhood of that 20. It would be helpful in finalizing the arrangements if you could let me know in which of these four events you are interested: (1) Saturday evening dinner, (2) Sunday morning meeting at the hotel, (3) Sunday lunch/tour at the museum, and (4) Sunday evening dinner at Skates.

I’ll plan on sending out another update in early May. -Jerry
