I read the message from pat Ward a few minutes ago. John, your conclusion that what he wants is outside of the Fortran standard is correct.
Yes, it is possible, but doing it is a fairly complicated process and requires some knowledge of Microsoft Windows programming. It is possible to program under MS Windows using Fortran but doing so involves some special tools and/or interfaces.
I don't have the time right now to reply to Pat Ward in detail, but I can construct a much more complete and helpful reply later in the day.
Pat, in the meantime, it would be helpful to let me know what Fortran compiler, with version, you are using. Also, what version of MS Windows and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
