I take your point, but why use 10 words when 2 will do?  It is the number in the 
"<array-spec>", i.e. I greatly prefer

[96:28] "<implied-shape-spec>s" -> "<assumed-implied-spec>s"
        and "the <implied-shape-spec-list>" -> "its <array-spec>".

The sudden appearance of <array-spec> might be a bit off-putting, so I recommend 
changing the p1 edit so it says
  "with an <array-spec> that is"
instead of
  "by",
and this seems clearer anyway.

Attached is a revised mjc002.  What do people think?
