The original justification for FORTRAN in 1956 was to reduce labor cost
and increase reliability. This is the reason we now have Fortran 2008,
instead of continuing to program in FORTRAN as Backus designed it.
For nearly everything my colleagues desire, there has always been and
always will be the retort "write your own, maybe even in C."
That's why C overtook Fortran in the 1970's and 1980's, while X3J3 was
treading water.
