(j3.2006) Function result variables with the ASYNCHRONOUS attribute

Does 9.6.4.1p6, viz.

For asynchronous input, a pending input/output storage sequence
affector shall not be referenced, become defined, become undefined,
become associated with a dummy argument that has the VALUE
attribute, or have its pointer association status changed.

envision the case of a function result being a pending input/output
storage sequence affector at the time the function returns?

I.e., does producing the result val from the return back to the
reference, or using the function result value at the point of the
reference, constitute a reference to the function result variable?
