OK I agree that "symmetric" has a special mathematical meaning that applies
only to a square array of rank 2 - aka: "square matrix" - and doesn't extend
to the generality of arrays that Fortran provides. (I still think
"symmetric" should mean "possessing some sort of symmetry", either with
respect to properties of an object, or to ways it can be handled, but ...)

Bill says the term is in somewhat common usage for coarrays. So what might
still be needed somewhere is a one-line explanation of the term.
