Dear Dan,
David Muxworthy, the BCS Fortran convenor, has suggested that I contact
you regarding obtaining contributions to the meeting I have started to
arrange at the 2007 Supercomputing Conference in November in Reno. The
current position is described in my message below.
Please can you let the members of J3 know what is being planned and say
that I would be glad to hear from them if they wished to make a
contribution. I have copied Van onto this message so that, as a
recipient of my original message, he know of my request to you.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give towards the celebration
of a major milestone in the development of computing and the
contribution of a major figure in computing to it.
Best wishes,
Peter Crouch

Hello Paul,
Earlier today I submitted the following abstract for a Birds of a
Feather session to the organisers of the 2007 Supercomputing Conference.
"Fifty Years of Fortran - in memory of John W Backus, 1924 - 2007"
2007 is the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Fortran
compiler by IBM and also saw the death in March of John Backus who led
the team that created Fortran. This meeting is to commemorate one of
John's many achievements in the field of computing and to show that
Fortran is a language with both a past and a future and is alive and
well in the 21st century.
Suggested topics, but not intended to limit participation:
Appreciations of the life and work of John Backus, with a focus on Fortran
Early experiences with Fortran in the 1950s and 60s
Current applications of Fortran codes
The current and future direction of Fortran standardization
An outline programme will be available at
www.fortran.bcs.org/2007/bofprog.php. If you are unable to attend SC07
written contributions can be put on the above site.
Contact Peter C Crouch (pccrouch at bcs.org.uk) for more information.
A somewhat longer version of the above is on the web page already. I
realise I may be aiming for too much organisation for a BoF meeting but
I feel this is a historic occasion and that any contributions made,
either in person or in writing should be recorded for posterity.
Would you be willing for me to add your name to my submission as "second
leader", I believe it is called? It has been acknowledged and from the
positive response I received to my initial enquiries I hope it will be
accepted. Within a limit of 150 words the abstract can be modified up
to a final deadline of 31 July. I have asked for the 5.30 to 7pm slot
on the Wednesday of the Conference.
I have copied this message to all the contacts in the US Fortran
community that I have been able to obtain and I would like to know if
you are willing to contribute or know of anyone else who might be willing.
Paul, I see from your weblog that you have been in touch with Jean
Sammet, John A.N. Lee, Daniel Leeson and Irving Ziller in the last few
years. Would you be willing to contact them, or give me their contact
details, to see if they would be willing to contribute?
Ian, assuming the submission is accepted would it be possible to have a
mention of the meeting in "Fortran Forum"?
I hope I will not ruffle any feathers, pardon the pun, as a Limey trying
to organise a meeting in the USA and I welcome any assistance you can
give me from those of you based in the States.
I look forward to hearing from all the recipients of this message.
Best wishes,
Peter Crouch
