OK, so that is an extreme case. But there are some more practical
considerations. For example, there are some people who regularly
attend as alternates. One could imagine all of them becoming alternates
of the Chair (I assume the Chair has to be a primary member), and we
would not have to worry about who xxx could be an an alternate for.
That's a potential benefit. The "members" mail list is open to all the
primary and alternate members. So, could a vendor, for example, appoint
all the people in his compiler group to be alternates and have them
added to the members-only mail list? Maybe that does not matter since
we conduct most communications on the open list anyway. One could
imagine many former members becoming new alternates - sometimes that
could be fine (Richard Maine, for example), but another case might be
less helpful. Can the committee vote to reject an alternate
designation? There seem to be a lot of questions that arise if there
are no limits on alternates.
The TC versus TG question is a potentially more important for some of
the members. If we are a TG then belonging to both the Fortran and C
committees costs a total of $1600 - same as this year. If we are a TC,
the total will be $2400 - same as belonging to Fortran, C, and C++ this
year. There might be temptation to drop one.
Cheers,
Bill
