But MPI is the poster child for hard to debug messes, and its use is not 
declining as far as I can tell.  And pointers in C... !

Unexpected random output would hopefully lead to a decline in either (1) 
the use of that program, or (2) misuse of the language.

In general, the decline in the use of a language happens only when there 
is a better alternative available.  Or at least an alternative people 
have been duped into thinking is better.
