With Jeanne Adams' passing a Fortran era has passed.
Jeanne provided the right touch of leadership during a critical phase
of Fortran standardization - arguably the most critical phase, when
debate was raging over whether to keep Fortran a static language
(e.g., F77) or a dynamic one (e.g., allow recursion). That debate may
be laughable now, but it was the defining moment (over a 10-year
period) for post-F77 Fortran.
In large measure we can thank Jeanne for paving the way, in terms of
committee leadership, to modern Fortran. It was stimulating and fun
to work with her. Thank you Jeanne.
